3 Ways to Tell if a Leak is Present in Your Home

One of the most daunting things a homeowner can run into is a plumbing leak when they least expect it. While you can’t prevent one from occurring, there are some common signs to be on the lookout for that may indicate a leak is present — and catching the problem in the nick of time can always make a difference.

That said, here are some of the most common signs that a water leak is present in your home:

1. Water Bill is Higher Than Normal

Typically, a water bill doesn’t fluctuate unless more water is being used — it’s as simple as that. And if you feel as if you haven’t been using more H2O than normal, but your bill’s grand total is astronomical, that can indicate you have an undiagnosed plumbing problem present.

2. Water Meter is Continuously Running

Have you checked on your water meter lately? If not, that’s a prime area to examine — it can tell you whether or not something odd is going on with your home’s plumbing system. Contrary to popular belief, water meters do not “spin” when no plumbing fixtures are used.

Before you head on over to your water meter, walk around your home and ensure that all plumbing fixtures are turned off completely. After that, locate your water meter — if you see that it’s still ticking away, you’ll need to call your plumber immediately; there’s a good chance something is leaking in your home.

3. Random Water Stains are Present

While looking around your home, do you notice any random water stains on the walls? If so, this may also indicate that you have a water leak on your hands — specifically with one of the pipes behind the wall. On the other hand, if you happen to notice a stain on the ceiling, that may indicate two scenarios.

If your roof needs to be replaced or repaired, and there was recently a storm in the area, there’s a chance that a water leak may result from roof-related damage. However, if your home has two floors and the leak is seen on the main level, that might indicate that a pipe between the two levels is leaking.
